Emergency Landings and Partial Panel Simulations

This morning visibility was terrible. It was so bad that I almost lost hope of flying today, but in the afternoon, it improved, and the weather became flyable. Let’s go!

Today we’re moving on to circuits, but sometimes the instructor sets the power to idle and says, “emergency landing.” He usually does this when I least expect it. Depending on my altitude, I either turn towards the runway and land downwind or find a suitable field and continue straight in. If I have enough altitude, the best option is to turn and land upwind on the runway, but I have to be at least on a downwind leg for that.

Then the instructor simulated a partial panel. Now we only have the altimeter, VSI, and engine instruments. No airspeed indicator, no CDI, no attitude indicator. To be honest, after about the third circuit, I realized that in basic VFR, it’s not a problem: a familiar aerodrome and good visibility allow me to fly visually, which is exactly what my instructor wanted. But initially, I was confused. The turn coordinator really helped.

My landings have improved, and my altitude estimation is also getting better. However, I still struggle with descending with flaps 40. I feel like we’re falling like a rock. I think that’s because we rarely use flaps 40 in a normal landing due to the long concrete runway. I definitely need more practice.
